OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts: Making the Right Choice for Your Car

After a collision, you receive a repair estimate. As you scan the list of parts, you see unfamiliar acronyms: OEM, A/M, or LKQ. This isn't just technical jargon; the type of parts used to repair your vehicle has a significant impact on its fit, finish, safety, and future value. Understanding these options is the first step toward a quality repair.

This choice determines whether your car is restored with parts made by the original manufacturer or by a third-party company. Each has its place, but knowing the difference empowers you to advocate for the best possible outcome for your vehicle.

Decoding the Lingo: OEM, Aftermarket, and Recycled Parts

Let's break down the three main categories of parts you'll encounter in an auto body repair estimate.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)

OEM parts are brand new and made directly by your car's manufacturer (or a company they contract to make them). They are identical to the parts your vehicle had when it rolled off the assembly line.

  • Pros: Guaranteed perfect fit, finish, and quality. They meet all factory safety and crash-test standards and won't void your new vehicle warranty.
  • Cons: They are the most expensive option.

Aftermarket (A/M)

Aftermarket parts are produced by companies other than the original manufacturer. They are designed to function as replacements for OEM parts but can vary widely in quality.

  • Pros: They are significantly less expensive than OEM parts.
  • Cons: Quality and fit can be inconsistent. A poor fit might lead to uneven gaps between body panels, and the material might not have the same structural integrity or corrosion resistance. Look for parts certified by the Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA), which indicates they meet a higher standard for fit and quality.

Recycled / Like Kind and Quality (LKQ)

These are original OEM parts that have been harvested from a salvage vehicle (a car that was deemed a total loss, often due to damage in a different area).

  • Pros: You get an OEM part's quality and fit at a lower price point. It's also an environmentally friendly choice.
  • Cons: Availability depends on the make, model, and year of your car. The part may have minor cosmetic wear from its previous life.
Choosing the right parts is a critical conversation to have with your repair shop. A quality shop will always prioritize a safe repair and explain exactly what is being put on your car and why.

How Your Insurance Company Plays a Role

To control costs, many insurance policies state that the insurer can specify the use of aftermarket or recycled parts for a repair. They are often contractually obligated to pay only for the cheapest available part that will restore the vehicle's function.

However, this doesn't mean you are stuck with parts you don't want. As the vehicle owner, you have rights. You can often insist on using OEM parts, but you may be required to pay the price difference between the aftermarket part your policy covers and the more expensive OEM part.

What to Ask Your Auto Body Shop

A transparent and trustworthy shop will be happy to answer your questions. Arm yourself with this list:

  • What type of parts are listed on my estimate?
  • If you are using aftermarket parts, are they CAPA certified?
  • Can you show me the difference in cost to use all OEM parts?
  • How will the choice of parts affect my vehicle's factory warranty?
  • Will these parts work correctly with my car's ADAS safety systems?
